Bosnia and Herzegovina: Families of the missing still seek answers

During meetings with representatives of the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bauer highlighted the value of the ICRC’s trusted relationships with communities and authorities and noted the significance of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s participation in the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.

Between 2018 and 2025, the ICRC worked in partnership with the authorities across the region to identify and develop new pathways to improve progress on clarifying the fate of the missing from the 1990s conflict.

Emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation on this matter, Bauer stated: “The issue of missing persons remains a central humanitarian concern in the region. Families are still seeking answers, and authorities are encouraged to continue supporting the commissions working to clarify the fate of the missing.”

The meetings also focused on continued close cooperation and support for the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ICRC has been present in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1991, working closely with authorities, the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other partners to support humanitarian action and address the needs of families and communities.
